Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Knox writes to his wife from a camp outside Petersburg, Virginia. Reports he has put out a "shingle" that reads "...shirts repaired wholesale and retailed,"and opened a shirt business. Says he repaired a neckband and a wristband and it took him three hours to do it. Mentions considerable artillery firing on their lines the past four days. Complains the rebels have drove in the picket lines.

Knox enlisted 3 December 1861 in Connecticut as a 2nd Lieutenant. He mustered into "B" Co., CT. 1st Heavy Artillery.
