Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letters from John S. Bradbury to his brother, Samuel, dating from 1861 through 1865. They include notable statements of support for Lincoln.

John S. Bradbury was born c. 1832 and enlisted in the 3rd regiment, Iowa, light battery in August 1861. He was mustered out in October 1865, having been promoted to the rank of full 7th corporal.
