Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses a conflict between a recent Circuit Court ruling and an act of the Maryland legislature concerning William's role as trustee of the Elkton Bank.

Wirt served as United States Attorney General 1817-1829. Williams was a Baltimore lawyer, state senator, and United States District Attorney for Maryland, 1824-41.
