Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses an upcoming fraud court case and indicates that he does not know much about it. Refers Wise to Colonel James Polk of Somerset County, Maryland to get more information.

Williams was a Baltimore lawyer, state senator, and United States District Attorney for Maryland, 1824-41. Wise was a Representative from Virginia and later a Confederate general in the Civil War.
