Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses difficulties surrounding the settlement of her husband's will. Mentions the sale of some property left to her children by their father. States she is in desperate need of money and would like him to resolve this matter. Refers to herself and her children as "an injured widow and her helpless orphans."
