Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Negative by T. H. O'Sullivan, positive by A. Gardner, circa 1865. The image shows the stones and boulders built into defensive walls by union forces. A book or notebook lays on top of a boulder on the right-hand side of the photograph. Wooden poles, made from branches, lean against the breastworks. The image has an accompanying text leaf.
