To his mother. Discusses his first impressions of camp life and laments his poor choice of luggage ( an inadequate trunk). Also uses one page to write a request that dividend payments from stock he owns be paid to her.
United States Hotel Hartford Sept 30 '61
Dear mother Arrived safe & sound about 12 PM after a detention at willimantic of only an hour and a half. Found Mr. Wait & Marvin in the cars the latter is going to enlist as private in Capt Ward's company. Mr. Wait went over the State House with me before dinner & introduced me to the state Librarian and secretary &c. Have been down to camp this afternoon saw the major & Dr. Lathrop whose face is very familiar. I used to see him in Norwich every day or two but did not know his name. I find Capt. Russell of the 8th has accepted the Lieut. colcy in the 10th - you remember he was Adjutant of the second. I am sorry we lose him. The camp is not very inviting just now as the men are not dressed in uniforms & few of the officers are there yet. I think I shall remain at the hotel for the present. I think there is no doubt but what I shall be home for a day at least before we leave Hartford. I hope uncle George received my dispatch in good season. I think I made a mistake in the trunk. This one will give out in a week, that is the inside will be out & it will be simply a box. I think I will change here. My things are too heavy for such a trunk. Any letters might be addressed to me at the u.s. Hotel. Did uncle George hear from uncle William to day. I hope he did. I expect to perform my first official act this PM making out some requisitions. I think either the Lippen pull or the dappell horse will do me nicely & I hope uncle George will not trouble himself any more about it. with much love to all Chas.

Cashier of state Bank Boston date Pay Sarah P Coit on order whatever dividend due me on ninteen (I believe) shares capital stock of said institution belonging to Your Respt Rumies P [Grosvener] by Sarah P Coit conservator across the back endorse - Please remit to Sarah P Coit - then I should write a letter asking J. Livret Key cashier to remit a dividend check for amount of the inclosed dividend order. But I shall probably be home to fix it for you in a day or two.
