Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Allen updates a Colonel, whose name is not specified, whom he previously served under regarding his post-war activities. Reports that he worked as a school teacher in Texas before his ill health required him to move to the National Soldier's Home in Ohio, where he could receive adequate medical treatment. Requests that the Colonel grant him a loan so that he may return to Texas in time to teach during the spring semester. Written on stationery depicting (in color) an aerial view of the National Soldier's Home.
