Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Curdy as Chairman of the Executive Committee and [Crosper?] Westmore as Secretary of the League, admitting David B. Scott as a member.

The Union League of America, sometimes called the Loyal league, was a political organization for Union sympathizers intending to raise troops, furnish supplies to soldiers, and distribute political literature. The League originated in Ohio in 1862 and established branches in many Northern (and few Southern) locales. Lieutenant General Winfield Scott served as President of the League in 1863.
