Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the second Seminole War in Florida and Georgia. Focuses on the corrupting influence large public expenditures to sustain the war are having on the Americans inhabiting the region. Fears greed will cause the conflict to be elongated and result in the extermination of the Seminole Indians, rather than their removal.
