At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed document issued by the War Department. If Thomas accepts the appointment, he is instructed to return an oath enclosed with the letter. Thomas is also instructed to report to Brigadier General Robert Anderson for orders.

Sir:
You are herby informed that the President of the United States has appointed you
Brigadier General of Volunteers,
in the service of the United States, to rank as such from the seventeenth day of August, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-one. Should the Senate, at their next session, advise and consent thereto, you will be commissioned accordingly.
Immediately on receipt hereof, please to communicate to this Department, through the Adjutant General's Office, your acceptance or non-acceptance of said appointment; and, with your letter of acceptance, return to the Adjutant General of the Army the OATH herewith enclosed, properly filled up, SUBSCRIBED and ATTESTED, reporting at the same time your AGE, RESIDENCE when appointed, and the STATE in which you were BORN.
Should you accept, you will at once report, by letter, for orders, to Brigadier General Robert Anderson, U.S. Army.
