Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Proclamation announcing North Carolina has a Republican form of government, and appointing William W. Holden as provisional governor, who duty it shall be to subscribe rules and regulations for the purpose of altering or amending the U.S. Constitution. Signed in type by President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William H. Seward.
