At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

An official letter written in Boston from John Avery, the Secretary of State for Massachusetts. It informs Varnum of his election to Major General of the Third Division of the Militia of the Commonwealth by the two branches of the Legislature.

Avery was secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and later became Secretary of State of Massachusetts.
