Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Announces the sudden death of the Honorable Silas Lee, Esq. and "[B]y this event the office of district attorney has become vacant. The eyes of the President will therefore be turned towards some suitable person to fill that vacancy ..." Advises the position be filled by someone "who can discharge the duties of that office, with fidelity, & give the greatest satisfaction to the public."
