Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

sister [Sophia Parrott] He is glad that she is improving. Eight to ten thousand men are building five forts and when they are finished "this place will be the strongest Fortified p[l]ace in Tenn[essee]." There are skirmishes nearly every day. A shell came very close to taking his head off but he heard it coming in time to jump off his horse and the shell passed across his saddle. He has had command of the regiment since the battle of 31 December and has heard from some of his men taken prisoner then.
