Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The first letter, on page 1, was from Mauger to Thomas Cottle, dated 10 November 1762.
The second letter, on page 2, was from Mauger to Thomas Lambert, dated 6 November 1762.
The third letter, on page 3, was from Mauger to Thomas Lambert, dated 10 November 1762.
The fourth letter, on page 4, was from Mauger to Henry Livingston, dated 7 December 1762.
