Dear Sam:
Herewith my check for $20 - on account of Willie - He brought over a Cotton cape for me on his last trip - I don't know what it cost - he did not send me any bill - but I presume you need money so I pay this now and will settle with Willie when he comes. I have been expecting to hear about the Covington P. O. after your interview with McKinley. I haven't the slightest expectation of getting anything. Some of my friends thought he had reserved the Guatemala commission for me or it was one of the places ?. I indicated to him I did not a ? with ? or his not having appointed a single Confederate to ? foreign place showed it was de? not accident. Today I see that he has promised Guatemala to H?ter of KY. It is hard to have to choose between free Silver and Mark House. Brady wrote me that he was going to see McKinley last week. I still hope you may come out all right.
Very Truly.
