At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Dear Sam:
Last night I went to John Daniel's house to see him on business. This is the first time I have called on anyone this winter & I went on an urgent matter. He spoke very kindly of you & said that there is a provision for a lot of new places in the Interior Dept: & he thinks you can get one. Said he wo. Send me the bill today with this item marked. If he does I shall forward it to you. Revencomb had better write to Daniel & Slemp about it. Willie Mosby has just left here. He ways that he thinks he con get you a place under Agnen wh. will suit you much better than one on the ?. The enclosed letter you can keep. It is from Genl. Hooker, one of Forrest's generals. He worried my cousin. I will not be here next week.
