Mr. Wm. A. Chapman:
Dear Willie:
I recd. your letter from Hong Kong; suppose you are about due where San Francisco once stood. I consented to go to Boston to a banquet given by the Middlesex Club on April 27th - Gen. Grant's birthday. They give one every year - This is the fifth invitation I have recd. from them. This year they sent a Committee to call on the Atty. Genl. to persuade me to accept. He is the Vice President of the Club. I recd. a royal welcome & was taken - (all Expenses paid) - over the State. They couldn't have been more cordial to Gen: Grant. Have a letter from your father - he seems to be contented & happy. Recd. a letter yesterday from Miss Kidde - She spoke of your calling - She is now at 318. E. 17th St Oakland: writes that everything belonging to the S. P. Law Dept. was lost. What has become of the Forbes family? Did they lose much by the Earthquake? Do you ever hear from the Robertson's? Have you ever met, or seen, Cameron Forbes at Manila? He is one of the Commissioners. I have never seen him but recently called on him here & he called on me - but [inserted: we] missed each other. He is a son of Major Forbes of Boston, whom we captured. I called to see his sister, Mrs. Webster of Harvard. Have just mailed a letter to Miss Kidde.
