Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Doubts that Beauregard ever had a "lost order" at First Manassas. Believes that there was never a missing battle plan, as some have asserted.

After these twenty years I was glad to receive from you this morning the corespondence of Gen; Ewell & Beauregard of July 61 - about the "Lost Order"
I never was satisfied that thre ever had been any "order sent" I always thought it doubtfull that in the excitements at Hd Qrts on that Sunday []
