At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 70,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World to soldiers’ letters from World War II and Vietnam. A letter from son to father detailing the son joining the ship the Savannah after leaving the Connecticut.
The year estimate is based on mention of the Fort Pickins affair in the letter. Fort Pickins was one of the only southern forts that remained in Union control for the whole of the civil war. The "affair" mentioned might be when Fort Pickins was taken by the union on Januray 10 1861.
