Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Describes celebrating Washington's birthday by the firing of a gun for each state in the union, although they are unsure of whether or not states have been added since the Utah Expedition began.

Moore was an army surgeon on duty during the Utah War, 1857-1861. Kelly was Moore's sister.
