Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Brass belt buckle engraved with American eagle holding arrows and an olive branch in its talons, with "E pluribus unum" on a banner coming out of its beak, on a starry field. The buckle appears in GLC 4196.01, Moore's photograph in dress uniform.

John B. Moore was an army surgeon during the Utah War and the Civil War and was later named U.S. Surgeon General.
