Shoulder epaulets from Moore's dress uniform. The letter "S" appears, possibly accompanied by a missing "M" for "medical staff," accompanied by the other epaulet in GLC04196.12. These accoutrements appear in GLC 4196.01, Moore's photograph in dress uniform.

John B. Moore was an army surgeon during the Utah War and was named Brigadier General during the Civil War. He was later named U.S. Surgeon General.

Epaulets were worn on the dress coat for all ranks from 1855 through 1871 and for Generals through 1889. "MS" signified "medical staff."
