Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Sherman, commander of the Military Division of the Mississippi, writes to General Howard during the Atlanta campaign. Instructs Howard to join forces with General George Henry Thomas. Writes "I dont think the enemy yet understand our movement. They had made no effort to stop us..." Relates that General Schofield (possibly John McAllister Schofield) reported a possible enemy threat. Instructs Howard to go up the Newman Road in case of heavy battle. Written in pencil.

… Gen Thomas Column is on the River road at Red Oak. Also communicate with him up the Newman Road. Do the job of teaming up . . . in the most approved style. You cannot do too much of it. I dont think the Enemy yet understands our movement. They have made no effort to stop us. Only Cavalry holding the Road. Schofield reports a force which he thinks may threaten him. In case of heavy Battle up one way, come up the Newman Road…
