Encloses a letter from General William T. Sherman (see GLC04492.01). Relays that the first part of the letter reviews Sherman's services in the army. States that the remainder deals with General William Babcock Hazen, of whom McLean apparently asked for an opinion of his conduct and character. In the referenced letter, Sherman highly praises Hazen.
Matthews was an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court from 1881-1889. McLean was the owner of the Cincinnati Enquirer and was a prominent figure in the Democratic Party.
