Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

No. 2334. Asserts that Louis Eugene Bouvier (a.k.a Cullen) deserted from the Imperial Ship the "Renommee" in the Sea of China. Asks Maury what the sailor's nationality is and inquires about the man's position on the Georgia. Villeneuve signs as French naval commander and major general of the Marines at Cherbourg.
