At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A fellow inmate at Point Lookout gave this Bible to Flinn. Contains two inscriptions recording the gift: "C. R. Myers to J. W. Flinn Prison Camp 1864" and "From C. R. Myers to J. W. Flinn Prison Camp Point Lookout Maryland 1864."

John William Flinn was a member of the 17th Mississippi Infantry in Barksdale's (Humphrey's) Brigade, McLaw's (Kershaw's) Division.
