Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his wife that he has walked 120 miles in four days and still has another 130 miles to go into the mountains. His feet are sore but he feels great. Describes sleeping on the ground and the arduous journey ahead of him. The included envelope possibly held this letter.

Conger and his wife were both born in New York and lived in Chicago after 1860 and through the 1880 U.S. Census. Conger worked for the U.S. Police.
