Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of the caskets of Abraham Lincoln and William Wallace Lincoln in the receiving vault of Oak Ridge Cemetary, Springfield, IL. Taken sometime in May, 1865. Willie's remains were exhumed upon his father's death and transferred to Springfield, where both of their remains were interred with Edward's and Tad's in 1871. Half stereo-card size print. Ex-Fay.
