Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph entitled, "Military Bridge Aacross the Chickahominy" taken by David B. Woodbury dated June 1862. Image is of federal soldiers armed with axes, shovels, and other tools are lined up on the nearly complete Woodbury's Bridge constructed over the Chickahominy River in Virginia. A supply wagon can also be seen.
