Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of nine Union officers. Photo was most likely taken in Washington. Two women peer from a window on the left hand side of the image. A young boy wearing a cap sits in front of the men. The soldier to the far left holds a bugle, while the soldier to the far right wears a gray uniform, possibly a state guard or local militia uniform. Present are a colonel or major (second from right upper row) and 1st lieutenant (upper row right-most). Inscription on verso: "Gardner XXXI 875."
