Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of Harewood Hospital, Washington, DC. View of 12 rectangular buildings comprising the hospital. Water tower can be seen to the left of the image, along with part of the white fence that bordered the hospital. Most of the photograph shows a large field near the hospital. Graphite inscription on verso: "Harewood located on farm of W. W. Corcoran on Seventh St. Road. near Soldiers' Home. -; 15 period of service from Sep. 1862 to May 1866. under the charge of Surgeon F. E. Mitchel, First Maryland Regiment, Dr. Thomas Antisell, and Robert E. Bontecore." Additional inscription on verso: "Harwood Hospital XXXI 825."
