Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a Gardner photograph. Brig. Gen. Julius White and eight staff officers posed in front of tent, under a shelter built of branches. Small dog near the seated man on the right side of the photograph. Same men as in previous photograph. General White is seated center. (Inscription on the front of modern mount: "Alex. Gardner - Union Officers 1864 Meserve Coll.") This information from previous cataloger, there is no modern mount present.
