Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

By T.R. Holland [Philadelphia?]. Based on an earlier [younger] photograph: "From a Portrait in possession of Mrs. Anderson." Major Robert Anderson was in command of Fort Sumter when it was fired upon on April 12, 1861, setting off the Civil War. He would surrender the next day, Anderson was forced to surreder but became a hero to the North.
