Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image shows a vignetted portrait of Admiral Worden in dress uniform. He has a long grey beard and is looking to his left of the camera. Inscriptions on recto: "Same size" and "C.M. Bell, 463, 465 Penna. Ave. Washington, D.C." Inscriptions on verso: "Admiral J. L. Worden, U.S.A." and "Engr, to the companion to Gen. M. Pullman W.N. Maheny [?]"
