Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collection of albumen photographs dated 1863 printed by Haas and Peale. Consists of 43 photographs depicting fortifications found on Morris and Folly Island, South Carolina. Images were taken before and after Battle of Fort Sumter.

The images, with printed descriptions, have been sleeved in period album pages. Cover separate. Items are numbered 1-44, missing no. 15.
