Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

re: true to his "prediction", Hartsuff is now in the Rockies. He describes the setting to his brother and then goes on to discuss the "complicated" situation with the Utes who are being forced from one reservation to another in the wake of 1) the "Mackie and Thomasburg massacre" and 2) the discovery of "several rich mines" on their former territory.
