Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

re: letter fragment in which Hartsuff claims that nothing has changed, although a "burial party" has been sent out to bury dead Indians and his own hospital is full of wounded. Claims that General Miles has sent a Peace Party out to the Indians to give them one last chance. "Peace if we can - war if we must."
