Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"No 12." He was happy to learn that his box arrived home safely. Describes the burning of a house that blocked the line of view from the fort and visiting wounded in the hospital. One of his articles was printed in the Journal (see GLC05241.50). He sends more money home to pay off his debts.
