Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He asks his wife if she does not agree that he has been sufficiently punished. He wants to either resume their relationship or end it with a divorce. He is willing to pay for the divorce and some of the children's expenses but will do anything to avoid it and return to family life in Salt Lake City. It is up to her to decide what they will do. He begs her to write to him. With letter to his children also dated 17 May 1903 (see GLC05245.18.02).
