Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Requests that the recipient ship white and red top turnip seeds by steamer to New Orleans. Suspects a Mr. Brown of being "Abolitionist, or Black Republican (synonymous terms). If he be so- no more Bills must be made with him- on My account, & I will regret, I ever made a bill with him."
