Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Comments on managing the Salt Lake Theatre with Hiram Clawson, and having to pay all the proceeds to the landlord. He mentions that Clawson brought up Caine's situation (taking up residence in Washington, D.C. in order to protest anti-Mormon federal legislation) to Brigham Young, who wishes that Caine stay in the capital. Williams is sending what money he is able. Discusses Leo Hudson playing at the theatre while sick, and their difficulties in their business interactions with her. Mentions that "the Japs were nice people" when they played at the theatre. Williams and Clawson spoke with Brigham Young about George Francis Train giving lectures. Discusses other difficulties in business.
