At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written on stationery of Congregation B'Nai Jeshurdun, New York. Goldstein writes that the United Nations, "weak and faulty an instrument as it is," has been a major deterrent to a world war in the troubled times following World War Two. He discusses his reason for joining the Rabbinate, including his desire to promote the welfare of humanity and the to be of service to the cause of Judaism.
