Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Genl. [William K.] Strong has been assigned to the command of Cairo. Genl. Paine will not be permitted to command any depot. He is continually violating my orders & throwing everything into confusion. When Genl. Strong is installed you can return to St. Louis. [P.S.] No more reinforcements to be sent to Genl. Pope unless he asks for them."
