Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter to the Secretary of the Navy recommending Mr. Wharton for a Lieutenancy in the Marine Corps.

Breckinridge, from Kentucky, served as Vice President of the United States 1857-1861, as United States Senator 1861-1862, and as a brigadier general in the Confederate Army. He was an unsuccessful candidate in the 1860 Presidential election.
