At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Hickox, Chairman of the Democratic State Committee, replies to a letter from Douglas, a Democratic United States Senator from Illinois (refer to GLC05621.02). Discusses the publication of Douglas' letter, which described political proceedings and Douglas' stance on patriotism at the beginning of the Civil War. Labeled as a copy.

Douglas served as United States Representative from Illinois 1843-1846, and as Senator 1847-1862.

Dear Sir.
Your letter to me of the 10th May published in Washington on the 17th -
I telegraphed Mr Cutts on Monday morning from here not to publish the letter for the present - to which he replied "Telegraph me when you wish me to have the letter published" This needed no answer, I wrote him the same day that I sent the dispatch (the 13th) explaining the whole matter.
I make this explanation to you fearing that you might think that I omitted to send him the dispatch as you requested. We are pleased to learn that you are rapidly recovering your health.
