Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mentions that it just snowed but that previously the weather had been pleasant for awhile. States that the water pipes to the refineries froze and busted. Advises that crude oil is worth $7 a barrel. Mentions that the area is just being developed and a few wells have been built. Informs that he will bring some crude oil to help her with her rheumatism.
