At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Seventeen letters from Simon Cameron to Robert G. White. Most of the letters concern Cameron's campaigns for various offices and his political maneuverings and use of influence. Cameron was a Senator from Pennsylvania and President Lincoln's Secretary of War in 1861. Thanks to his wealth and connections he was power broker in national and Pennsylvania politics throughout his life. Robert Gray White was a district court judge in Pennsylvania, and was Cameron's friend and political ally.
