At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Victory at the Peninsula, Huntsville Recaptured, A Brilliant Victory in the Valley of Virginia, Merrimac Blown Up, Norfolk Evacuated by the Enemy, Proclamation by the President, The Fall of New Orleans, Battle of South Mills.
An editorial examines the depredations caused by Yankees. Another editorial discusses various competitive papers' takes on the State Journal, particularly the Standard. A notice reports the visit of Jefferson Davis's wife and children in Raleigh. A presidential proclamation invites Confederate citizens to worship together.

The Weekly State Journal was edited by John Spelman, who was also the paper's proprietor. The paper ran from 28 November 1860 to February 1864, and then from November 1879 through 25 June 1884. There was also a semi-weekly edition.

Spelman was named the Printer to the State in 1860 through 1862 and authorized publisher of the laws of the Confederacy. He previously edited the Salisbury Banner. This paper was later titled the Democratic Press, also a weekly paper.
